Questions and answers

How to set up the extension, sign in and use the filters, and why things work the way they do. For a walk through the screen, press Guide in the top right corner (in the menu on a phone).

The browser extension

Why does DiscoHunt need a browser extension?

Discogs does not let other websites read its marketplace. Your own browser can read it, because you are a normal visitor there. The extension is a small helper that lets your browser look up fresh listings for the records you chose. It only works while you press Search or Transfer to Discogs, or Load all listings or Load more reviews on a seller’s page, and when the results, a seller’s listings or a copy you open show listings older than 6 hours: then it refreshes them by itself. It also reads the reviews of a copy, release or master you open when DiscoHunt has not loaded them yet. It does not see your passwords and does not read other websites.

Can I use DiscoHunt without it?

Yes. You can sign in, import your lists, filter and browse. You see listings we saved earlier, and they can be out of date (old ones show a small clock and “Older than … h”). Fresh prices and the cart transfer need the extension.

How do I install it?

Open the extension page. It shows a button to your browser’s store (Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons or Firefox Add-ons) and three short steps with pictures: add it in the store, confirm when the browser asks, then reload DiscoHunt.

Does it work in Firefox, Safari or on a phone?

The extension runs in Chrome, Edge, Brave, Opera, Arc, Vivaldi and Firefox on a computer. Safari is not supported. Phones cannot run it, so on a phone DiscoHunt never asks for it: you pick lists, search, filter and open copies from listings saved by your searches on a computer (the bar at the bottom says how old they are). You can add copies to your cart on the phone, but sending the cart to Discogs needs a computer with the extension.

It is installed, but the header still says “Extension not found”
  1. Open your browser’s extensions page and check that the extension is switched on.
  2. Reload DiscoHunt.
  3. Still there? Restart the browser, then reload DiscoHunt. This also gets the newest version after an update; otherwise the browser updates the extension by itself, usually within a day.
The header says “The DiscoHunt extension was updated. Reload this page.”

Your browser updated the extension (or it was switched off and on) while DiscoHunt was open. The open page cannot reach the new version, so a Search or a listing that was loading stops. Reload DiscoHunt and press Search again.

How do I know it works?

The header shows only a green dot instead of “Extension not found” (point at the dot to read “Chrome extension connected”). After you press Search, the small clock (“Older than … h”) disappears from the listings it fetched. Listings older than 6 hours in the results, a seller’s listings or a copy you open refresh by themselves, with the progress in the header.

Signing in and your lists

How do I sign in?

Press “Sign in with Discogs” on the My lists blade. Discogs opens and asks you to allow DiscoHunt. After you allow it, you come back signed in. There is no separate DiscoHunt password.

Do you see my Discogs password?

No. Sign-in uses Discogs OAuth (the official Discogs way to let an app act for you without your password). The access token we get is stored encrypted.

Why do you need access to my Discogs account?

To read your wantlist and your lists, so you can choose records without typing them in. This is also how we know who you are.

How do I load my wantlist and lists?
  1. On the My lists blade, press “Fetch lists and wantlist” at the bottom.
  2. Wait. A big wantlist can take several minutes the first time, because Discogs limits how fast it answers.
  3. Your wantlist and lists appear with their item counts. Press the button again any time to refresh them.
The box says my Discogs connection expired

Discogs rejected the saved connection: it ran out or you revoked it. Press “Reconnect Discogs” in the same message and allow DiscoHunt again. Your lists and choices stay.

My lists are empty after I sign in

Press “Fetch lists and wantlist”. Signing in does not load them by itself. If the button is greyed out, your Discogs account is not connected yet: press “Connect Discogs”.

I changed my wantlist on Discogs. How do I see it here?

Press “Fetch lists and wantlist” again. DiscoHunt does not watch your Discogs account in the background.

Choosing records and searching

What is the difference between Release and Master?

A release is one exact pressing (for example the 2013 Virgin pressing). A master groups every pressing of the same album. Release looks for that exact pressing only. Master accepts any pressing. Switch between them above the records on the List blade.

How do I choose what to search for?
  1. Tick one or more lists on the My lists blade.
  2. On the List blade, tick the records you want. Use All or None to tick many at once. Turn on Ticked only to see just the records you ticked.
  3. Press Search at the bottom of the List blade.

Filters

How do I use the filters?

Open the Filters blade and set what you need: price, media and sleeve condition, where the seller ships from, minimum seller rating, offers, seller comments, format and year. Results update as you change them. “Reset”, at the top of the Filters blade, clears all of them. DiscoHunt remembers your last filters on this browser and puts them back on your next visit.

Why is the price in “≈” euros or my currency?

Listings come in many currencies. We show the original price and an approximate value in your currency, using approximate exchange rates. Filters use euros inside. Change your currency on the profile page.

What are near misses?

A near miss is a copy that fails a filter by a small margin, for example one grade lower, or a little above your price. It is not in the results, but a chip counts it. Press “relax” on the chip and the filter loosens just enough to include that copy, for example the price limit moves to about its price (in whole euros, shown in your currency) or its grade is added; Back undoes it. You decide how small the margin is on your profile, under “Near misses”.

What does “Include not available for shipping” do?

Discogs marks some listings “Unavailable” for you because the seller does not ship to your address. They are hidden unless you tick this. It needs your country on the profile page, and that country must match the shipping address of your Discogs account. Listings nobody in your country has fetched yet are still shown.

What does “Price dropped recently” do?

It shows copies whose price went down lately. Results can be incomplete: we only know about price changes we saw ourselves, when a search or a refresh fetched the listing again. How many days count as recent is set on your profile, under “Price moves”. Open a copy to see when its price last changed and, under Price history, every change we saw.

Why do I see fewer sellers than I expect?
  • A filter may be hiding copies. Press “Reset” to check.
  • The chip with the near-miss count shows what you would get with a slightly looser filter.
  • Without the extension you see saved listings only, so some sellers can be missing.
  • A copy that Discogs says is sold when you open it leaves the results.
How do I enter a year filter?

Type single years and ranges with commas, for example 1975,1980-1985.
